Post Doctoral Degree

POST-DOCTORAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTSHU Graduate Seminary offers a Post-doctoral Theological degree (ThD) to those individuals who have already graduated with a doctorate from an acceptable university.  This degree offers an opportunity to all those individuals who would like to enrich their previous studies with a focus on one of the Special Emphasis Tracks and other selected courses from the curriculum.  The Executive  Committee of HU will determine the eligibility for the post-doctoral degree, considering, for instance, if the work for the prior degree involved research for new knowledge.  To obtain the Post-Doctoral degree, a combination of course work, and the design and completion of a new research study are required.  Minimal requirements for the Post-doctoral degree consist of a total of 31 credit-hours.
Core Inclusions:
Because Post Doctoral students will be earning a Holos degree, two of the Basic “essential” courses that form the core of the Holos program of study are to be included in every Post Doctoral course of Study.  The student can choose two of the following core courses:
710-Literature Survey
727-History of Science
731-Inner Counselor
752-Mysticism or 757-Holistic Theology
For a total of 6 credit hours

Other Minimum Requirements:
701-OrP                    1 credit hour
996-Prelims                3 credit hours
998-Research and Dissertation        12 credit hours
Electives:                 9 credit hours

Post Doctoral students are allowed to apply up to 9 hours of equivalencies and transfers through a revue involving the Admitting Officer. These credit hours can be used for a Post Doctoral Degree in Spirituality and Health, but cannot be used to fulfill the electives for a Post Doctoral Degree with a Special Emphasis.  Bringing in credits and graduating with a Special Emphasis would require more than 31 minimum credit hours.
Post Doctoral use of Special Emphasis Tracks:
Post Doctoral Students may choose one of the four HU Special Emphasis Tracks as part of their Post Doctoral Degree. In this case, the nine credit hours of electives are used to fulfill the Special Emphasis.  The designated advisor works with the student to design a curriculum that is tailored to that student’s particular interests and needs in terms of fulfilling the Emphasis.  Electives listed in the Track are given first consideration.  However, electives from the general curriculum may also be chosen depending on their fit with the student’s background experience and current needs.  Track Directors who wish to participate in advising students about these elective choices will contact the Dean of Faculty. The Dean will ask the designated advisor to contact and include the Director in the advising process.  The choice of electives will be based on the nature of background experience the student brings in, and upon the goals the student sets for the Post Doctoral study and Dissertation.
.  Transfer credits cannot have been used in fulfilling a previous degree program.  A maximum of 9 hours of transfer credits is allowed.  Instructor: To be designated by the Executive Committee.
