Master of Theology

MASTERS DEGREE OVERVIEW

Students who enroll in a degree program are governed by the set of requirements for completion of the degree in place at the time they enroll. They can, at any time replace that set of requirements with a subsequent set of requirements (some requirements will change with each enrollment period), but they can not “mix and match” within the original set and the new, substitute set. Changing to a subsequent set of requirements may add to or subtract from the credit hours required for graduation. Advisors help students ascertain the consequences of a change from one set of program requirements to another and to subsequently select courses that will fulfill the requirements governing their program of choice. THREE PROGRAMS FOR THE MASTERS
Candidates for the Masters degree complete a minimum of 36 credit hours by taking 12, three-hour courses or 10 three-hour courses plus the six-hour Thesis or Essays course. Three options are offered:
1.    The Basic Masters with Thesis Program;
2.    The Non-Thesis Masters Program, and
3.    The Masters Special Emphasis Track Program (OR transfers from the Certificate Track Program Levels I and II).

I. Basic Masters with Thesis: 37 Hours includes ORP: ( Core: 22 hours, Electives: 15 hours). During the completion of required courses, the student requests the appointment of the Chair and Committee. Following completion of the academic course work, Masters students enroll in 780 - Research and Thesis and enter the full research phase of their Masters program. This generally requires a “Pilot” research project using a minimum of 12 persons as subjects. Upon completion of the actual research project and the related thesis manuscript, students defend their thesis.

II. Non-Thesis Masters: 37 Hours Includes ORP: (Core: 19 Hours, Electives: 18 Hours). Students complete the required courses of the Basic Masters (with the exception of 737 - Quantitative Research Design). At Orientation & Planning (ORP), students select a probable Essay topic and complete a tentative Program Schedule, selecting electives that support that topic. Students begin their study by fulfilling all of the three-hour core requirement courses. During the completion of these courses, the student requests the appointment of the official Chair and committee. Final decisions on electives are based on their relevance to the specific topic. Beginning in the final semester, students enroll in 790 – Masters Essays and Exam and write four, ten-page essays based on the specific topic. The first three essays explore and develop the chosen topic in depth and include an extensive bibliography. In the fourth essay, the student integrates the material of the first three essays. Students then sit for a one-hour oral exam based on the essays, conducted by telephone, and recorded. A grade of “B” or better is required for graduation.
NOTE: The six credit hours of 790-Masters Essays and Exam are a minimum requirement. Continuous enrollment with a minimum of three hours of Masters Essays and Exam each semester is required until all the degree requirements are completely satisfied. This also applies to 780-Research and Thesis. Instructors: Chair and Committee.

III. The Masters Special Emphasis Track Program 37 Hours. (Core 19 hours. Electives are made up of pre-selected Track Courses).
Tracks Programs at HU are open to the public as an ‘Easy-Access’ non-degree Certificate Program or as a Special Emphasis in both the Masters and Doctoral Programs. Masters students may choose to complete one of the Special Emphasis Tracks. Successfully completed Track Programs, are noted on the diploma and in the transcript. This program offers two CHOICES for completion of the degree:

1) Two additional three-hour elective courses or
2) One six-hour course, 790 - Masters Essays and Exam.
